The West Highland Way is a trail that stretches for 154km from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the UK. Typically it is undertaken as a multiday hike, but each year ultra-trail runners take on the challenge of completing the entire trail in a long distance race.
The trail starts in a small village square where you can fuel up with a coffee and a croissant, starting gently with well-formed trails on fairly flat terrain. This soon evolves into rolling countryside, classic ascents such as Conical Hill, a long loch-side section through Loch Lomond, wee Scottish villages and endless stunning Highland vistas.
The trail originally ended on the outskirts of Fort William and there is still a signpost there to mark the spot, but it has now been extended a little further to take visitors into the vibrant centre of the township where there is a statue of a weary hiker rubbing his feet, and a selection of bars to take a well-deserved drink.
