A short loop that packs a punch with its two climbs, fast rocky descents and gorge-eous views over the southern Mendips and the Cheddar Gorge. While you won't have it to yourself, it's popular for a reason! As a single loop, it’s a quick jaunt out but it can also be made into a longer training run with back-to-back loops (the terrain is interesting enough!) - one of the best options within an hour’s drive of Bristol for building up some elevation and experience on more technical terrain in preparation for mountain events.
The loop is best run in a clockwise direction to avoid having to buy a ticket to go up Jacob's Ladder (it's free to run down but not up)! From the Black Rock car park, take the track heading south. It's a steep rocky climb to begin which then levels out and becomes easier. Stay on the main, well-worn track as it gradually climbs through trees and bracken.
At the top of the climb, the views open out across Somerset, the circular lake in the distance is the Axbridge reservoir. Down to your right is the Cheddar Gorge - head over if you'd like to peer down into the dizzying depths below. The Cheddar Gorge is a popular climbing crag; keep your eyes peeled for climbers scaling its limestone walls. Otherwise, it's down down down the fast, fun rocky descent. The track is wide and you can pick your line. Don't lose your feet though; you'll most likely have an audience at this point!
As the descent flattens, you'll reach a gate. Go through this and, as you come to the lookout tower, take the steps down to the right to descend Jacob's Ladder, dodging the tourists who have paid to hike up. At the bottom, head through the turnstile and turn right along the road. After 200m, cross over the road to the stony Cufic Lane (the trail is signposted) to begin the climb back up to the cliff-top. Carry along the lane for 250m and then take the narrow public footpath on your right, heading up the hill. At the top, take a sharp right and follow the wider path into the woodland.
The climb levels out at the top as you exit the woodland. Keep straight and then head right, taking a grassy path across the field. Follow the path as it follows the side of the gorge. There are great views behind and to your right - say cheese for some photos!
After a steep descent via steps, carry on straight through the kissing gate. The track climbs gradually for the last time before a final rocky descent. At the bottom, turn right after the gate to head back to the Black Rock car park.
If you know of any public toilets near the trail start or on the route, please login and then let us know so we can update this section.
There is free parking on the side of the road at Black Rock - but get there early as it fills up quickly! If it's full, you might be able to find a free space in one of the lay-bys further down the gorge (you will then need to make your own way up or down the gorge to join the loop).
Or, head down to one of the larger paid car parks near the bottom of the gorge or park in the village. You can then start the loop at Cufic Lane, rather than Black Rock. Cheddar is on the bus route for the 126 Wells - Weston-Super-Mare bus. The closest stop to Cufic Lane is Tweentown. Additional bus routes operate from this stop on some weekdays (668 Shipham - Street and 48 Burnham-on-Sea - Cheddar).
