This trail starts in Castleton where there is a couple of car parks and plenty of pubs or cafes for refreshments.
Depart from Castleton along Buxton Road, heading towards Treak Cliff Cavern. Proceed along Mam Tor Road, passing the historic Odin Mine, a disused site noted for its scientific significance and as one of England’s earliest mines.
After the Mam Nick car park, which offers an alternate starting point, ascend the grassy slope via a sequence of stone steps leading to Mam Tor’s summit. Here, explore the remnants of an Iron Age hill fort and enjoy expansive views over the peaks, valleys, and Castleton.
Continue along the Great Ridge, which links Mam Tor to Lose Hill, savoring magnificent views of the Kinder Plateau to the northwest and landmarks like Castleton, Peveril Castle, and Winnats Pass. The path, primarily flagstone, remains clear and well-maintained.
Pass through Hollins Cross, where pathways converge.
Go past Banker Bank and Back Tor en route to Lose Hill. At its summit, marked by a cairn, soak in the broad vistas before descending via steps to a pathway cutting through grassy slopes.
As the path flattens, follow a scenic, tree-lined stream through meadows to a paved lane returning to Castleton.
Note the trail’s popularity, especially during peak times, and consider early arrival to secure parking. Trail is accessible year-round.
Dogs are allowed, but leashes are necessary due to the likelihood of encountering livestock. Note, the trail includes several stiles, which may be challenging for larger dogs.
Blue John Cavern; This cave, named for its rare Blue John Stone, which is still extracted here, welcomes visitors - check visiting hours in advance.
