This is a great loop to experience some of the highlights of the Three Capes walkway if you only have a day to do so!
Starting from Fortescue Bay campsite, find the start of the Old Cape Pillar track. This is signposted with a sign saying Bare Knoll campsite, when you are driving in it is just before the ranger's hut.
This is a nice undulating track through forest and moorland - keep an eye out for snakes! At approximately 7km, you will reach a trail junction. Go straight ahead here to go onto the Cape Pillar track which will be an approximately 19km out and back to the end of the Cape. After approximately 2km you will reach Munro hut. Take some time to admire the facilities and the view from the deck!
From here continue along the Cape track. There are some large boardwalk sections through the forest, but as you get further along towards the end of the Cape this becomes more constructed rock paths. You will have amazing views from the cliffs in all directions. Towards the end of the Cape - you have the option of ascending "The Blade". Would very much recommend checking on the view from up there. Further along there is also "The Chasm" which is also worth a photo stop.
From the end of the Cape, retrace your footsteps back to the track junction. Here, you now want to turn right onto the Three Capes track. There will be signs towards Retakunna hut. Not long after this hut, is the largest single climb on the track, climbing ~250m. Continue through the forest with the odd cliff view, until you reach the turn-off of the Cape Huay track (approximately 8km from the track junction). Here you have the option of doing another out-and-back along this Cape. It is approximately 3.3km and has some stunning views. It is not featured on this route as it can be an optional extra for those who have extra in the legs!
From Cape Huay turn off back to Fortescue Bay is about 4km, mainly descending on lots of rocky steps. Prepare for your post-run treat, maybe a dip at the bay if the weather is good!
Dolerite columns on the Capes. Wildlife - snakes, wallabies, seabirds, eagles, and even some passing whales!
Toilets are available for public use from within the campground.
There is a day stay car park clearly signposted after passing the campsite. Make sure you have a valid park's pass for access to Tasmania's national parks.
