This is a very popular loop for walkers and runners alike in the middle of the Parliamentary Triangle in Canberra.
Start at the side of Lake Burley Griffin halfway along Queen Elizabeth Terrace in between the two sets of flagpoles. Across the lake is Anzac Parade leading up to the War Memorial and Mount Ainslie, in the other direction are the old and new Parliament Buildings.
To do the loop in a clockwise direction, head West along the path towards Commonwealth Bridge. You will pass through a line of trees and to the right of the National Library. Take the ramp up to the start of Commonwealth Bridge and proceed to the right towards the main CBD centre Civic. On your left across the water is the National Museum of Australia, on the right is the Captain Cook Fountain.
Take the path to the right off the bridge and head around the lake in front of the National Capital Exhibition Centre and Commonwealth Park (the site of Floriade in Spring). Follow the path and cross the bridge in front of the Nerang Pool. As soon as you reach the brown gritty surface, you are nearly half way... look right to admire the views of the Parliamentary Buildings.
Keep following the lakeside path and pass in front of the historic Blundells Cottage. Soon you will reach Kings Park where you can take the optional side trip across to Queen Elizabeth II Island which is the site of the National Carillion. Veer left to get up to the Kings Bridge and turn right to cross the bridge.
Proceed across the bridge and veer right at the end to loop back to the lake then turn left along the path....you are nearly there. On your left is the National Gallery and then the High Court of Australia and soon you will see the line of flagpoles that marks the start/end point.
Many National Buildings and historic monuments along the route....just about everywhere you look along the route!
Available at frequent intervals along the route.
The number 6 bus runs along King Edward Terrace which is very close to the lake. There are carparks at various intervals along the lakeside loop.
