Follow the Opanuku Pipline track for 1 and a bit kilometres.
Go left down Christian Road for 500 metres past the Filter station until the sign for Filter Track on your left.
Follow Filter Track up and over - 300 metres elevation means this will be mostly a walk. Enjoy the view of Auckland City from the top of the hill.
Once you have reached the end of Filter Track, turn left and run up Scenic Drive till the Waitakere Dam entrance on the right hand side.
Waitakere Dam Acess Road is paved but you can run on the grass. About 1.2km down there is a path on the right hand side that has good views of the Cascade Valley.
Take the stairs on the right hand side of the Dam to Waitakere Tramline Track. Follow the tracks for 2km till the junction with Anderson Track. Optionally just before the junction you can follow the pink tags to check out the old timber dam- a 10 minute side journey. Turn right onto Anderson Track and follow it till the next junction, which you turn right again which takes you up to Scenic Drive.
Cross Scenic Drive and take the Peripatus track until the junction with the Swanson Pipleine. Optionally here you can go left and run the Swanson pipeline track there and back - or take a right turn and follow it till Christian Road. Go past the filter pond, take a left and follow the track till the road. Go back down the grassy hill and follow the Opanuku Pipeline Track back to the car.

Features of interest
Good view from the top of Filter Track back over the city. Goes past the Waitakere Filter station and the pond. Option to view the old timber dam just off Anderson Track. A lot of mature Kauri. Goes through 3 tunnels and follows the old Waitakere Tramline.

On the right hand side of Mountain Road if you are coming from the city, about 500 metres from Hayes Road. Entrance is gated with a decent carpark
25 minutes from CBD. Parking for 4-5 cars at the Opanuku Pipeline Entry
Make sure you take a right on Anderson Track - otherwise you will end up going to the Cascades. Make sure you take a right at the second junction as well, otherwise you will have to run up Scenic Drive to get to Peripatus Track.
Short-sleeved thermal top, Windproof jacket, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map.
Filter Track and Peripatus Track get very muddy after rain
