I would recommend doing it on long summer days, or as an overnight trip with GPS and maps. The car park is located just north-east of the bridge, across the Arawhata River.  There is a short track on the map. Follow it and it continues further. It is a track marked track for DOC workers (but not private). It follows the Thirsty Ridge, then you will pass Lake Mere and Lake Greaney.

On the west side of the Lake Greaney, the track continues towards Mount Helveldt and the 1344 point. This part is steep and exposed, but still ok. From 1344 the track goes down, back to the car park.
