Custom Challenge
Total Challenge Points
The Ring of Fire (which next year incorporates the Tussock Traverse) is a classic big wild loop run around the North Island's biggest mountain, Mt Ruapehu.
This Challenge is inspired by the event and sets you the goal of doing as many big loop trail runs of 21.1km or longer from the Wild Things Directory as you can.
Taking part will get you Ring of Fire and Tussock Traverse fit for the race in March and could also win you a reimbursement of your entry fee!
How to earn Challenge Points:
Track your progress and standing on the Challenge Leaderboard.
The more Challenge Points you earn the better your chances of winning one of the Major Prizes.
Post pics from your runs to your Instagram account using the hashtag #rof2022trailchallenge to be in to win bonus prizes.
TAKE CARE OUT THERE: These are committing runs and it's winter for at least the first half of the Challenge. Please go properly prepared (see the Suggested Gear List under 'Staying Safe' on trail guides) and always let somebody know where you are going and when you expect to be back.
MAJOR PRIZES
NB Anyone can take part in this Challenge but to be in to win one of these you will need to enter The Ring of Fire or Tussock Traverse race before the end of the Challenge (31st December 2021)
At the end of the Challenge we will draw 4 winners, each of whom will receive reimbursement of the cost of their race entry - there will be one winner for each of the 73k & 50k Ring of Fire events and for the Tussock Traverse 32k & 21k events.
The total value of the prize pool is over $1,100!
INSTAGRAM PRIZES
During the Challenge we will periodically award prizes to Challengers who post pics to their Instagram account using #rof2022trailchallenge - quality pics that are in keeping with the theme of the Challenge have the best chance of being selected.
Each prize will consist of a RoF long sleeve merino and beanie combo valued at $135 each!

No worries — you can join a Wild Challenge at any time while it's running.
When you join, we'll automatically award any challenge points you've earned since the challenge started, so you won't miss out just because you joined late.
If you've only just connected Strava or Garmin, we'll sync your last three months of activities too, so eligible activities can still count towards the challenge.
Connect your Strava or Garmin account to Wild Things and we'll automatically sync your activities and add any that qualify to the challenge.
You don't need to add activities manually — just get out there and do your thing! Each challenge has its own criteria for earning points, so check the challenge details above to see what counts.
If you use both Strava and Garmin, you can connect both — we won't create duplicate activities.
Absolutely. You can join as many Wild Challenges as you like, and the same activity can earn points across multiple challenges if it meets the criteria for each one.
We usually draw challenge winners a few days after the challenge finishes. We wait at least 2–3 days to allow any late activities to sync from Strava or Garmin before finalising the results.
If you're a winner, we'll get in touch with you directly.
