This is a lovely run with a couple of hills to work the legs. The road provides a nice warm up, especially on colder autumn/winter mornings. It is a well marked route with other tracks going off so you can easily make the run longer if wanted. There are some smaller river crossings but the bigger ones have swing bridges. The rivers are ok to drink out of.

There are 3 small huts along the way - Fowlers hut, Stanleyvale hut and Scotties hut. Hot pools are a small detour up Cow Stream.

There is lots of parking available at the homestead. No public transport is available.

Moderate.

There are other tracks along the way but it is generally well marked with DOC signs. A topo map can be helpful if you don't know the area at all.

Non-existent.

Long-sleeved thermal top, Windproof jacket, Beanie/thermal headwear, Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Survival blanket, Cellphone, Map, Headtorch and spare batteries.

Plenty available from the streams and rivers.

Water is still available from the main rivers during summer. There is likely to be snow and frosts about during the winter.

Trail Reviews

Great runnable trail! We did it on a hot day but there were plenty of rivers to drink from all the way round. Trail is really runnable and easy to navigate so you can switch off and enjoy the views! Some cool historic huts along the way.

If you want to extend it even further, have a go at the 100km option out into the Waiau and back and round as well :)
